Skin acne picturesIsotretinoin may be necessary to treat severe skin acne. It is very effective in treating cystic acne and prevent scarring. It is taken once daily by mouth for 15 to 20 weeks. Isotretinoin can have serious side effects. It is associated with birth defects and miscarriages. It should not be taken during pregnancy or even a month before pregnancy. All women should use contraception during the month before treatment with isotretinoin, during treatment period and for at least one month after stopping treatment.
